Where a decision actually forms and how to get there.
MP Strategy Partners advises principals and institutions on objectives where structure, positioning and access determine the outcome.
01 Scope
What the practice covers
The practice works on objectives that are clear in intent and unclear in route. That covers the definition of the objective, the structure through which it is pursued, the parties who need to be involved and the conduct of the engagement itself.
Mandates are generally taken up in three situations: where an objective has stalled without an obvious reason, where an unfamiliar market or institution is involved, or where the outcome depends as much on how a proposition is put as on its merits.
Scope is set at the outset and stated in writing. Work outside it is a new conversation, not an assumption.
02 Capabilities
What we are asked to do
Objective definition
Reducing a broad intention to a specific objective with an identifiable decision point attached to it.
Market and counterparty assessment
Establishing which parties are credible and capable, on what evidence and which are not worth the time.
Stakeholder mapping
Setting out where a decision sits, who carries influence over it and how authority is distributed in practice.
Positioning
Framing a proposition around the interests and constraints of the party receiving it rather than the party sending it.
Representation
Acting for a principal in discussion and negotiation where a separate party is useful to the position.
Execution oversight
Coordination through the interval between agreement in-principle and agreement in-fact, alongside existing advisers.
03 Method
Four stages, in sequence
Definition
The objective is reduced to something specific: what has to change and which party is in a position to change it.
Assessment
A working view of the parties involved, the constraints each operates under, and where authority sits in practice rather than on the organisation chart.
Approach
Route, timing and framing are settled in advance. The opening sets the terms of everything that follows it.
Continuity
Coordination through the period after initial interest, which is where most mandates lose momentum.
04 Engagement
Three structures
Defined mandate
A single objective with a stated end-point. Scope and fee agreed before work begins.
Standing mandate
Work across the life of an objective, from first approach through to conclusion.
Retainer
Continuous advisory for principals holding several positions or institutional relationships concurrently.
Commercially: a retainer, a project fee, or a structure carrying success components where that suits the objective better. Terms are agreed in writing at the outset and are not revisited during the mandate.
05 Standards
Fixed and applied without exception
- Work is measured against the objective agreed at the outset.
- Engagement is concentrated rather than broad.
- Information is disclosed in stages appropriate to the relationship.
- Confidentiality applies in both directions and is assumed, not negotiated.
- Mandates outside the competence of the practice are declined.
- No legal, tax or regulated financial advice is given at any stage.
